The original lighthouse was a hexagonal wooden
tower topped by a lantern. As the rise in the
fishing and timber industries led to a continued increase in
maritime traffic throughout Alaska, the Lighthouse Bureau saw
the need to enhance the lighthouse at Point Retreat.
